At Tribal Salvation Society (TSS), our mission is to uplift the agricultural practices and livelihoods of tribal communities in the KBK (Kalahandi, Bolangir, and Koraput) and Kandhamal districts of Odisha. These regions face significant challenges, including low agricultural productivity, poor income, and food insecurity. Through smart farming techniques and agro-agriculture, we work to help smallholder farmers boost their productivity, improve their living conditions, and create sustainable farming systems for the future.
A cornerstone of our approach is the establishment of farmers’ clubs, which bring together Below Poverty Line (BPL) families from the region. These clubs serve as platforms for farmers to discuss their challenges, share experiences, and collaborate on finding solutions to improve agricultural practices. The clubs are vital support networks that encourage farmers to adopt modern techniques such as crop rotation, organic farming, and efficient irrigation methods.
One of the key crops in the region is paddy, which forms the primary livelihood for many farmers. In addition to improving paddy cultivation practices, we promote the diversification of crops to reduce dependency on a single crop, helping to increase income and provide more food security. TSS also encourages farmers to participate in NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) programs, which offer supplementary income and help families during off-seasons.
TSS works closely with local banks, such as SBI Urladani, to provide farmers with access to Krishi Loans (agriculture loans). This financial support helps farmers purchase necessary farming tools, seeds, fertilizers, and other farming inputs that enhance productivity. We also assist farmers in accessing government schemes that provide subsidies for agricultural resources, allowing them to grow crops more efficiently and with fewer financial burdens. Through these collaborations, we ensure that farmers have the financial backing they need to thrive.
A key component of the program is focused on food security. Many tribal farmers face food shortages during lean seasons due to post-harvest losses. TSS works with local communities to develop or upgrade community-based storage facilities. These facilities allow farmers to store surplus crops safely, reducing food wastage and ensuring that food is available throughout the year, especially during times of scarcity.
Sustainability is central to the work we do at TSS. We promote the use of bio-composting as a means to improve soil fertility while reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers. Bio-composting is a low-cost, eco-friendly solution that enhances soil health, reduces farming costs, and increases crop yield. By training farmers in bio-composting techniques, we help them transition to organic farming, which not only improves the quality of their crops but also benefits the environment by reducing pollution and soil degradation.
In addition to organic farming, TSS emphasizes the importance of arboriculture, or tree planting, in agricultural systems. Trees play an essential role in farming by providing fruit, timber, shade, and other products. By encouraging farmers to plant fruit-bearing trees and forestry species, TSS helps diversify farming systems, reduce soil erosion, and provide long-term income sources. These trees also contribute to environmental conservation, protecting the land and improving biodiversity.
While we are proud of the progress we’ve made, we need your support to take these efforts to the next level. With your help, we can:
By empowering tribal farmers with the right tools, knowledge, and support, we can help create resilient, self-sustaining communities. Our efforts aim to reduce poverty, enhance food security, and promote environmental sustainability, ensuring a better future for the generations to come.
We invite you to join us in making a lasting difference in the lives of tribal farmers. Your donation will directly contribute to the implementation of smart farming practices, improving agricultural outcomes, and fostering sustainable growth in the KBK and Kandhamal districts.
